Sanilac County prepares to say goodbye to dedicated resident and County Commissioner

(SANILAC COUNTY) -- The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners held an emotional meeting Wednesday afternoon following the loss of a longtime friend and commissioner, John Merriman. He passed away at the age of 73 on Tuesday, December 25 after a lengthy stay in the hospital. John served the citizens of Sanilac County for 20-years. Along with his duties as District 1 Commissioner, he was the board chair and served on the Sanilac County Child Abuse Council, Council on Aging, Health Department Board, Human Development Commission, Sanilac Transportation Board, Thumb Area Michigan Works Board, and Veterans Millage Governing Board over the years. Former Drain Commissioner and current District 4 Commissioner Jim Bowerman says John worked hard for the residents in his district. District 1 currently includes Argyle, Austin, Custer, Evergreen, Greenleaf, Lamotte, Minden and Wheatland Townships. Away from the commissioner's chambers, John served as a member of the Deckerville Men's Club. He was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Deckerville and held a position of Ruling Elder for many years. John enjoyed working in his community and volunteered to help out any way he could. District 3 Commissioner and Finance Chairperson James Ruby says the board has set up a fund in lieu of flowers in honor of Merriman, who was dedicated to the "Walk For Warmth" campaign through the Human Develpment Commission. Funeral services for John Merriman will be Saturday, December 29 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Deckerville. Visitation will be Friday, December 28 from 1-8 p.m. at the Apsey Funeral Home in Deckerville.
