Bad Axe Schools rehire Don Schelke as Superintendent

(BAD AXE) -- The Bad Axe School Board held a special meeting Monday and hired Don Schelke as Superintendent. Schelke retired from the district as Superintendent this year and was rehired as a cost savings measure. His $50,000 contract was approved for the remainder of this school year and through June 30, 2014. The unanimous decision is saving the district approximately $119,000. Bad Axe Board of Education President Walt Salens stated that at a time when funding for school districts across the state are, at best, revenue neutral, the board thought it was best to explore the option to rehire Schelke. Other districts in the Thumb that are employing retired superintendents and have similar arrangements include Elkton-Pigeon-Bayport, Owendale-Gagetown, Capac and Millington. Schelke served as principal at Cass City Schools, Deckerville's High School principal for 13-years and 2-years as Deckerville's Superintendent before accepting the top administrator position in Bad Axe in 2010.
