(AREA) -- The Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center has released deer crash statistics for 2011. Reported car-deer collisions were down from 2010 with 53,592 in 2011 resulting in 1,464 injuries and eight deaths. In the Thumb, Lapeer County saw the highest number of reported crashes at 1,179. Sanilac County had 1,128, Huron-1,114, Tuscola-920 and St. Clair County had 739 car-deer crashes in 2011. According to the Michigan Deer Crash Coalition, many crashes go unreported, so actual crash numbers are estimated to be much higher. Motorists can help avoid dangerous encounters with deer by keeping a watchful eye, especially at dawn and dusk, be alert, and slow down when traveling through areas heavily populated by deer.
