(AREA) — Sanilac County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service will host a free Weather Spotter Class next month in Sandusky. The event gives the public and first responders an opportunity to learn more about severe weather, learn what kind of weather to report and when to report it. The class will be held on Tuesday, March 22 from 7-9 p.m. at the Firebird Theatre in Sandusky. Residents interested in learning about severe weather or becoming a Skywarn-Severe Weather Spotter should attend the class. Representatives from schools, daycares, nursing homes, and senior centers are also encouraged to attend.

This coming June will mark 1-year since tornadoes struck the Thumb, with the hardest hit area north of Sandusky and west of M-53. The twister hit the ground on June 22 at M-53 and Downington Road around 10 p.m. and ended north of Carsonville. Officials say the tornado destroyed structures, tore the roofs off of buildings, and downed several power lines and trees in its 22-mile path. Portions of a dairy farm north of Decker was leveled. Trained spotters reported funnel clouds northeast of Deckerville that night.

Anyone needing additional information on the March 22 Weather Spotter Class is asked to contact Sanilac County Emergency Management Director Todd Hillman at 810-648-8357.
