11-month old girl in critical condition in child abuse case

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Department is investigation a child abuse case, after being called to McKenzie Hospital Systems in Sandusky Wednesday, shortly before 2 p.m. According to sheriff officials, the incident involved an alleged child abuse complaint involving an 11-month-old girl that occurred earlier in the day in the Peck area. According to Det. /Sgt. Nate Smith, the preliminary investigation indicates the child was assaulted by a male subject during the morning hours while in the man’s care. The child was transported to McKenzie Hospital by personal vehicle and later transported by helicopter to a Flint area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The 22-year-old suspect was interviewed at the Sheriff’s Office and placed under arrest for Felony Child Abuse. He remains in the Sanilac County Jail with no bond as the incident remains under investigation. The child is reported to be in critical condition. 

The suspect cannot be named or identified until an official arraignment is made. Sanilac Broadcasting will have more information on this incident as it becomes available.
