(SANILAC COUNTY) -- Ten excited Sanilac County children were treated to a pizza dinner and Christmas shopping at the Sandusky Wal-Mart during the 2nd Annual "Shop with a Hero" event Tuesday, coordinated through the Sanilac County Sheriff's Department. Administrative Assistant Amanda Wojcik says the children selected through the Department of Human Services had dinner before they were paired up with a hero. Pizza and breaksticks were donated by the Sandusky Pizza Hut, beverages were donated by Pepsi, and Wal-Mart provided the cookies! Volunteers from the Applegate, Brown City, Croswell, and Sandusky Fire Departments, Sandusky, Lexington and Marlette Police Departments, Sanilac County Sheriff's deputies, and Marlette EMS personnel took time out to help the children pick out the perfect gifts for their family members. A grant from Wal-Mart and extra funding from last year provided the children with a $50 gift card for each member of their immediate family. If there was money left over, the children made a purchase for themselves. Volunteers from Detroit Edison and YAC students from Sandusky Schools helped the kids wrap up their Christmas surprises. Amanda is already thinking ahead to next year. The department will once again apply for the grant through Wal-Mart and with hopes of helping more families, Amanda will be seeking donations from local businesses that are interested in getting involved with the "Shop with a Hero" event.
