Woman killed in St. Clair County fire

(CLAY TOWNSHIP) -- Authorities say a 48-year-old woman is dead and another woman injured following an apartment fire in St. Clair County. The victim, Jeri Lootens, died in the fire Tuesday in Clay Township. Authorities say Lootens and a 52-year-old woman were trapped inside an apartment when the fire broke out shortly before 8 a.m.. The 52-year-old was rescued from a window and taken to River District Hospital for treatment. Authorities say the woman was then transferred to a Detroit area hospital. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Authorities believe both women lived at the apartment in the 9700 block of North River Road. Clay Township Police, St. Clair County Sheriff's deputies, and the Algonac, and Ira Township Fire Departments assisted Clay Township Fire at the scene. Two firefighters were treated at River District Hospital with injuries and released. Reports say an Ira Township firefighter was treated for exhaustion and a Clay Township firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
