Driver rescued from vehicle that enters water filled ditch

(SANILAC TOWNSHIP) -- An 81-year old Port Sanilac area man was injured in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon in Sanilac County's Sanilac Township when his car entered a ditch filled with water. Sheriff Garry Biniecki says the crash took place just before 1 p.m. on Mann Road west of M-25. Deputies report that the vehicle driven by Edwin Richard Wiegand was traveling east on Mann Road when he became distracted by a container that had fallen inside the vehicle. He lost control and entered the south ditch. The vehicle was partially submerged in the water as first responders arrived on scene. Wiegand was taken to McKenzie Health System in Sandusky for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Deputies say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The Port Sanilac Fire Department and Sanilac EMS assisted at the scene.
