WORLD CUP: Brazil ties Mexico, Belgium wins, deadlock for Russia and South Korea

UNDATED (AP) - Brazil and Mexico played to a scoreless tie in their second game at World Cup, leaving both teams atop Group A with four points. Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made a series of outstanding saves to help Mexico earn the draw. Also on Tuesday, Belgium opened its World Cup schedule by scoring a pair of second-half goals to beat Algeria 2-1. The Algerians led 1-0 in the 70th minute before allowing two goals during a 10-minute span. Russia and South Korea played to a 1-1 draw in the World Cup opener for both teams.  Alexander Kerzhakov scored the equalizer in the 74th minute, moments after coming off the bench. Meanwhile, the United States team has injury issues following Monday's win over Ghana. Jozy Altidore (JOH'-zee AL'-tah-dohr) was carried off on a stretcher after his left hamstring gave out in the 21st minute. He awaits tests that will determine whether he can return for this World Cup. The U.S. Soccer Federation says captain Clint Dempsey should be able to play in Sunday's World Cup game against Portugal despite a broken nose.

Video of a staircase most people use to get to and from Rio's famed Maracana stadium shows the structure built atop scaffolding wobbling under the weight of fans who attended the World Cup game between Argentina and Bosnia over the weekend. Fans of various nationalities said Tuesday that they were scared it might come crashing down. The Rio de Janeiro state government has issued a statement saying the staircase was inspected following complaints, reinforced and then re-inspected again to ensure fan safety.
