Icy roads result in several car accidents Sunday

(MARION TOWNSHIP) -- Icy roads were a contributing factor in a number of accidents that happened Sunday, including a personal injury accident at the intersection of East Deckerville and Maple Grove Roads in Marion Township. With Sanilac County Sheriff's deputies tied up on other accidents, Deputy Bryan Heilig was called out from his residence and used his personally assigned patrol unit to respond to the accident. It was determined that a pickup driven by 47-year old Jeffrey Bischoff of Deckerville, was traveling north on Maple Grove Road when he was unable to stop due to the icy road conditions. The pickup slid through the intersection and collided with a westbound van that was driven by 55-year old Krystyna Walenczak of Carsonville. The collision caused both vehicles to enter a ditch. Walenczak and her 13-year old passenger were taken to Deckerville Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Sheriff's deputies were assisted at the scene by the Deckerville Fire Department and Sanilac EMS.
