Recycling bins to be removed from Sanilac Co. communities week of June 16

(AREA) -- The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners have announced that recycling bins will be removed from the communities of Argyle, Buel Hill, Brown City and Marlette beginning the week of June 16. The Sanilac County Recycling Program will continue with drop off's accepted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the County Recycling Center located at 150 Orval Street in Sandusky and during regular business hours at the Tri-City Landfill located at 425 North Ruth Road. The decision to remove the community recycling bins was due to the cost of replacing inmate labor with paid labor, the amount of hours needed to sort materials in the bins, and because nearly 50% of the contents is trash. The recycling program accepts paper, number 1 and 2 plastics, cardboard, styrofoam, and tin. The program is funded through the sale of recyclable items, a county subsidy from fees collected a the landfill and support from Waste Management. No tax dollars support the program.
