(AREA) -- In cooperation with the Sanilac County Building Department, the Sheriff's Department reminds residents that the month of May if "Building Safety Awareness" month. The construction season is right around the corner and citizens are encouraged to protect themselves against criminal and civil loss. To help in the fight against fraud, always ask to see a builders license. Even if your project does not require a permit, the contractor doing the work may be required to be licensed. To help protect yourself, always get estimates, get your contract in writing, never pay for the job in full up front, discuss a payment schedule, and get references if possible.
