(MARLETTE TOWNSHIP) -- Sanilac County Sheriff's deputies say a 22-year old Marysville man apparently fell asleep at the wheel Monday morning on M-53, striking a semi truck. The crash took place shortly after 9 a.m. on M-53 south of Mayville Road in Marlette Township. Deputies say that the initial investigation and interviews at the scene revealed that Eric Zells was traveling south on M-53 in his car when he fell asleep and crossed the centerline, side-swiping a northbound semi driven by 54-year old Gregory Mossner of Reese. Zells had to be extricated from his vehicle with Marlette Fire's Jaws of Life. He was transported to Marlette Regional Hospital and later flown by helicopter to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw for treatment of serious injuries. Deputies say Mossner was not injured. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
