Dombrowski puts baseball's growth in perspective

DETROIT (AP) - Dave Dombrowski doesn't go out of his way to seek attention, but the tall, silver-haired general manager belongs on any short list of baseball's most recognizable executives. Now in his 13th season with the Detroit Tigers after successful stints in Montreal and Florida, Dombrowski can look back with a unique perspective on how the game has changed during his career. As the industry has grown, so has the size and effectiveness of a typical front office. Dombrowski recalls his first amateur draft in 1978, when he was working for the Chicago White Sox, and even some first-round picks were virtual unknowns. He's adapted well enough to be a general manager for three very different franchises, each with its own ownership approach and facing its own challenges.
