(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) -- A St. Clair County judge has approved an independent psychiatric evaluation for a Port Huron man charged with two counts of open murder. 32-year old Manual Gamez has been charged in the torture and deaths of 26-year old Melissa Ichenberg and 29-year old Daniel McRoberts, both of Port Huron, in July 2013. Prior to his preliminary exam in January, Gamez was evaluated and found competent to stand trial. He has filed an insanity defense. The second psychiatric evaluation will determine criminal responsibility, if the defendant was able to understand the consequences of his actions. The judge also denied a request at this week's hearing to dismiss three other counts--two counts of torture and one count of first degree criminal sexual conduct. Authorities say Ichenberg died of strangulation and McRoberts died of multiple stab and slash wounds.
