Recognizing the impact of Community Foundations

(AREA) -- During the week of November 12-18, the Sanilac County Community Foundation will join more than 700 community foundations across America for Community Foundation Week to tell the stories of lives changed, jobs created, and communities transformed through private and public community leaders and organizations.

Community foundations are independent, public entities that help institutional and individual donors provide support to local nonprofits. So far this year, the Sanilac County Community Foundation has helped the Peck Summer League start construction of a new ball field, McKenzie Health System produce Senior Exercise classes, the Sanilac County Sheriff's Department put on a Safety Awareness Fair, and the Sanilac Consortium for the Arts advertise their music series. Other organizations helped this year include the Humane Society, which provided a free pet vaccination clinic, MSU Extension provided coupons for fresh produce to Senior citizens, the Sanilac Career Center purchased CPR training supplies, the Sanilac County Health Department purchased a new vision screener, the Sanilac County Child Abuse Prevention Council purchased items for the Baby Pantry and the Brown City "Be the Change" program is planning Challenge Day 2013. The CPS Elementary School was able to erect a safety fence for their playground, the Delta Kappa Gamma Beta Tau chapter purchased items for their "Read to Me" project, and the foundation helped Eva's Place meet the needs of homeless individuals and those at risk of homelessness. There were also over 70 scholarships presented to local high school graduates to attend colleges, universities and trade schools.

Launched in 1989 through a proclamation by former president George H.W. Bush, the first Community Foundation Week included a congressional briefing about the work of community foundations throughout America and their collaborative approach to working with the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to address community problems.
