(AREA) -- Women in Sanilac County returning to school to pursue a "recognized degree program" at a college, trade, or technical school have the opportunity to apply for the William V. (Dixie) Flannigan and Jane W. Walls scholarship. Jane Walls and her husband, William "Dixie" Flannigan, felt a strong commitment to higher education when they originally established a scholarship fund in 2000. They hoped the scholarship would ease the financial burden of worthy Croswell-Lexington students and provide opportunities that they themselves were not afforded. Scholarships continue to be available for eligible Croswell-Lexington students. Jane Walls was a dedicated first grade teacher at Cros-Lex for over 20-years. Her college education was interrupted, first by WWII and then marriage and a family. She returned to college, graduating with her Bachelor's degree with high honors and later completed her Master's in teaching. Dixie Flannigan went into the carpentry business, building many homes around the Croswell-Lexington area. He believed that honest, hard work would not only put calluses on your hands but build integrity and character in an individual. Those interested in applying for the scholarship are asked to contact the Sanilac County Community Foundation at 810-648-3634. Applications are due March 28.
