LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development's Forestry Assistance Program will be exhibiting at a number of hunting, fishing and outdoor shows in the state this year. Under an agreement with the state Department of Natural Resources, MDARD awards grants to conservation districts to provide education and one-on-one technical assistance to private landowners and to communities regarding local forest health issues. The purpose of the program is to assist landowners to better understand, plan, manage, protect and use their forest resources. The outdoor shows are a good way for forestry program officials to reach forestland owners. The Forestry Assistance Program plans to have booths at Outdoorama in Novi, the Traverse City Hunting and Fishing Expo and the National Trappers Association 55th Convention and Sports Show in Escanaba.
