(NORTH BRANCH) -- An 8-year old boy remains hospitalized in serious condition after being struck by a pickup Monday evening while he was riding on a snow sled. Lapeer County Sheriff's deputies say the incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. on Slattery Road south of Hasslick Road in North Branch. The Ford pickup truck driven by 47-year old Wayne Bruman of North Branch was traveling south on Slattery. When he crested the hill he noticed a quad runner towing two children on two separate snow sleds in the roadway. Despite efforts to avoid a collision, the pickup struck the quad runner and 8-year old James McNees of North Branch. The 15-year old operating the quad runner and another 10-year old riding on the other snow sled were not injured. McNees was transported to McLaren-Lapeer Regional Hospital with life threatening injuries. Deputies say neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
