(IMLAY TOWNSHIP) -- A 47-year old Imlay City man was killed in a fiery crash Friday morning after his vehicle crashed into a semi truck. Lapeer County Sheriff's deputies say the crash took place shortly before 11 a.m. on M-53 south of Bowers Road in Imlay City. The victim, Eric Easterling, was traveling north on M-53 when he approached a vehicle ahead of him preparing to make a left hand turn. Deputies say Easterling passed the vehicle on the right and lost control as he re-entered the roadway. His vehicle then crossed the centerline into the southbound lane in the path of a semi truck, operated by Ronald Haag, age 53 of Minden City. As the semi struck the passenger side of the car, both vehicles became attached and entered a ditch. According to deputies, Haag was able to get out of the semi before a fire erupted, but Easterling, the lone occupant of his vehicle, was not. Officers worked to contain the blaze before Imlay City Fire and Rescue arrived. Easterling was pronounced dead at the scene. Haag was not injured and declined treatment. Sheriff's deputies report that neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
