Charges brought against pre-teen and his father in fatal shooting of friend Nov. 23

(MARLETTE TOWNSHIP) -- Charges have been brought against a boy and his father in the fatal shooting death of a 12-year old boy during a sleepover November 23, 2013 at a home on Howard Road in Marlette Township. The victim, Tyler Dunn, was shot by his friend with a long gun. Sanilac County Prosecutor James V. Young authorized a charge of careless discharge of a firearm causing death against the 12-year old Marlette Township boy. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 2-years incarceration. The pre-teen's father has been charged with firearms-possession by a felon, a 5-year felony and contributing to the delinquency-children, which is a 90-day misdemeanor. Authorities say the boys had been left alone for a considerable period of time when the incident happened. Prosecutor Young stated that "the lack of adult supervision, the presence of guns, and the failure to take appropriate measures to ensure the guns present in the house were out of reach, contributed to this incident."
