Man accused in double slaying found competent

(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) -- A St. Clair County judge has found 31-year old Manuel Gamez competent to stand trial in the brutal deaths of two Port Huron residents. 26-year old Melissa Ichenberg and 29-year old Daniel McRoberts were found dead at the Gratiot Village Apartments on July 29, 2013. Police say Ichenberg was strangled to death and McRoberts was stabbed more than 50 times. Gamez, also of Port Huron, has been charged with two counts of open murder, two counts of torture, and one count of first degree criminal sexual conduct. The mental competency hearing was held Thursday. Gamez remains jailed without bond pending a preliminary exam January 24 at 9:30 a.m.
