(EVERGREEN TOWNSHIP) -- A 74-year old Port Austin man was injured in a single-vehicle roll over crash Tuesday evening along M-53, north of Cass City Road in Evergreen Township. Sanilac County Sheriff Garry Biniecki says the crash happened around 5 p.m. Central Dispatch was advised by a passing motorist that the vehicle was starting to catch fire and that the driver was trapped inside. Sheriff Biniecki says that the quick response of the caller, Michael Blunt of Gaylord and another witness, the driver, George Kern was rescued from the smoking vehicle. During that time, Rodney Mazure of Cass City, immediately extinguished the fire. An initial investigation showed that Kern was traveling north on M-53 when he passed a vehicle, lost control on the icy roadway and hit a culvert. Kern's vehicle went airborne and rolled over before striking a tree and coming to rest. Kern was transported to Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe and treated for serious injuries. Deputies say it is believed that Kern was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Sheriff's deputies were assisted by the Cass City Fire Department, Cass City Police, Michigan State Police Troopers and the Sanilac County Road Commission.
