(SANILAC COUNTY) -- The Sanilac County Drug Task Force has announced that it is expanding funding to include all schools in Sanilac County for on-site substance abuse counseling. The goal of the on-site counseling and prevention program is to assist students who either have an existing issue with substance abuse or those who are at risk to develop a problem due to other factors in their lives. The additional funding will allow counselors to spend up to a full day meeting with students, as well as allow students to continue receiving services in the summer months. In 2012, 60 percent of high school students seeking counseling had active substance abuse problems. That's up from 58 percent in 2011. The increase in prescription drug abuse and Heroin throughout Sanilac County is a growing problem, and the added funding for high school counseling is intended to help address this.
