Disabled Veterans may qualify for property tax exemption

(AREA) -- Governor Rick Snyder recently signed into law Public Act 161 of 2013, which made an amendment regarding property tax exemption for disabled veterans and unremarried surviving spouses of eligible disabled veterans. To obtain the exemption, an affidavit showing  a legal description of the property must be filed. To have 2013 property taxes exempt, the affidavit must be filed with your local assessor for the December Board of Review. Affidavit's are available  at the Sanilac County Veterans Affairs Office, located at 171 Dawson Street, 2nd floor in Sandusky. Veterans must bring a proof of disability from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Anyone with questions may contact the Sanilac County Veterans Affairs Office at 810-648-0212.
