Preliminary exam Friday for Thumb woman charged with murdering son

(SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP) -- A preliminary exam for the 28-year old Huron County woman accused of murdering her 23-month old son is scheduled to take place Friday, October 19 at 9:30 a.m. Jennifer Lynn Emerick's preliminary exam in District Court was postponed back in August, because a key witness, the pathologist in the case, was unable to attend. Emerick has been charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and 1st degree child abuse. Officials say 23-month-old Donavin Cochrane died December 29, 2011, just days before his 2nd birthday. Results from toxicology tests took several months and a pathologist classified the death as a homicide. Emerick remains free on bond.
