(AREA) -- State Senator Mike Green of Mayville recently co-sponsored legislation that would ensure Michigan companies get priority on state contracts when possible. "These Michigan companies have been loyal to our state, providing jobs and opportunities even during tough economic times, and we must support them to grow our economy," stated Green.
Recently, a Michigan company lost out on a state contract because their bid was $574 more than an Indiana company. The contract was valued at nearly $250,000. Other states in the Midwest offer a preference for companies in their state. Ohio gives a 5 percent preference to businesses in their state when bidding on state contracts.
Senate Bill 517 would mirror similar Midwestern states' policies. The legislation has been referred to the Senate Committee on Reforms, Restructuring and Reinventing for consideration.
