(AREA) -- Marlette Regional Hospital proudly congratulates their emergency medical services (EMS) personnel Jeremy Beatty, EMPTand Chad Schmidt, EMT for their recent honor as "EMTs of the Year" for Sanilac County. This honor is awarded annually at the Sanilac County Police and Firemen's Association Public Safety Awards.
In their nomination, they received this honor for their life-saving actions at the scene of a personal injury accident in the winter of 2012. The accident victim had sustained life-threatening injuries, including an unsecured airway. EMT Schmidt and paramedic Beatty responded quickly and worked together to perform a successful emergency surgical cricothyrotomy as a last line effort to save the patient's life. A cricothyrotomy is an incision through the skin and cricothyroid membrane to secure a patent's airway for emergency relief of upper airway obstruction. Since this procedure is most often used as a last line effort in emergency cases, this procedure has only been performed twice in the past 10-years in Sanilac County.
EMT Schmidt and paramedic Beatty both possess exceptional professional knowledge, abilities, initiative, and devotion to patient care, and, for that, we thank them. They are very well-deserving of this honor.
