(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) -- The St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center/Residential Treatment Program will close effective August 24. The detention center has, on average, housed 30 youth per month in a facility that holds 70 beds. The closing is the result of a declining need. The Day Treatment/Night Watch will expand and remain active. There is a waiting list to obtain access to the program. Youth go to the center during the day for educational and mental health treatment and are then transported home with visits from surveillance personnel. Troubled youth that require 24-hour supervised care will be sent to an out of county detention center. The closure will result in the layoff of 31 part-time and 25 full-time employees. Eleven part-time employees with the Day Treatment/Nigh Watch Program will also be laid off.
