Representative Lauwers urges International Commission to adopt uniform ballast water guidelines

(AREA) -- State Representative Dan Lauwers of Brockway Township is urging the International Joint Commission to encourage states and provinces within the Great Lakes region to adopt uniform ballast water standards equivalent to U.S. federal requirements to help protect the environment and improve commerce. The International Joint Commission currently is inviting the public to comment on the functions, structure and membership of two new boards. Representative Lauwers took the opportunity to submit his legislative resolution that urges the states and provinces to adopt uniform ballast water standards. In addition, the 81st District lawmaker has introduced legislation designed to help increase shipping activity while continuing to protect the Great Lakes from invasive aquatic species by requiring the state to mirror the EPA guidelines relating to ballast water discharge.
