(SEBEWAING) -- Victoria Hudgins of Lapeer was crowned the Michigan Sugar Queen during the 49th Annual Sugar Festival in Sebewaing on June 14. Eleven candidates were vying for the honor. Queen Victoria will represent the sugarbeet industry as she visits with public officials, food industry leaders and the general public throughout the year. She will appear in over 20 parades, riding on the Pioneer Sugar floats. Victoria is the daughter of Joseph Hudgins and Molly Boyd, both of Lapeer and is a 2013 graduate of Lapeer East High School. She will attend Ferris State University in the fall, majoring in television and digital media production. Also crowned last Friday was first runner-up 19-year old Sarah Kimble of Owosso, and second runner-up, 18-year old Claire Forrest of Bay City. Michigan Sugar Company sponsors the competition and provides the winner with a $2,000 scholarship. First and second place winners are awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
