LOS ANGELES (AP) - Esther Williams was a championship swimmer and working in a clothing store when she was discovered. She went on to be the star of movies that always involved swimming of some kind. When Martin Short and Harry Shearer spoofed synchronized swimming on "Saturday Night Live," they were gently poking fun at the Olympic sport, but also at the movies made by Williams. She probably laughed along with them. She didn't take herself too seriously. When Fanny Brice said of Williams: "Wet, she's a star. Dry, she ain't," Williams laughed as hard as everyone else. She was a favorite pinup of G.I.'s in World War Two. Williams was married to Fernando Lamas, who Billy Crystal spoofed with the phrase "You look marvelous." Williams has now died. She was 91.
