(HURON COUNTY) -- A 22-year old man was rescued from Lake Huron Monday afternoon after his kayak capsized north of the Port Austin Harbor in Port Austin Township. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson says a friend called 9-1-1 and advised that the man had been in the water for about 20 minutes, was wearing a life jacket, and was hanging onto her kayak. Hanson responded in the department's patrol boat, along with Deputy Atwell and Port Austin Fire personnel. Once the patrol boat reached the pair, approximately a mile and a half northwest of the harbor, the man had been in the 55-degree water for nearly an hour. The 22-year old student from China was one of five people from East Lansing that were in separate kayaks. The others made it to shore. The female kayaker that called for help and the man rescued from the water were transported to Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe for treatment. Sheriff Hanson says that the incident Monday was one of three the department has responded to this spring. Boaters and other water enthusiasts are reminded that the water offshore is still very cold and prolonged exposure to the cold causes hypothermia, which can lead to death.
