(AREA) -- A bill to establish a state sales tax exemption on the proceeds of fundraisers held by local veterans' posts for active duty military personnel or veterans in need, passed the Michigan Senate on Tuesday. Senator Mike Green of Mayville introduced the legislation after a fundraiser organized by the Richville American Legion post for Sgt. Travis Mills was subjected to the tax. Sgt. Mills is a Vassar native and is one of only a few servicemen to lose all four limbs in combat during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and survive. Current state law offers a limited sales tax exemption to certain nonprofit groups. Local veterans' posts affiliated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and AmVets do not qualify for that exemption. The measure passed the Senate unanimously and now moves to the House for further consideration.
