(MARLETTE) -- The Marlette High School Quiz Bowl team took 6th place during the State Quiz Bowl Championship April 19 and 20 at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Over 600 students from 36 counties took part in the competition for Class A, B, and C and D schools. Locally, Cros-Lex, Sandusky, Brown City, Marlette, CPS, Yale, Dryden and Bad Axe School attended. Marlette won 6th place honors in the 27-team Class C and D Tournament. The team ended the tournament with four wins and two losses. Marlette Coach Bruce Irland said one of the more exciting matches had Marlette defeat Macomb by 5 points with a correct answer by Junior Adam Krause on the last question. Macomb had led Marlette for most of the match. Marlette's 6th place finish this year bested the school's previous 8th place finish back in 2003. This year's state team included Adam Krause, Larissa Duff, Andrew Howard, Jerod Hutchens, Chris Blatt, Collin Blatt, Charis Blatt, Janet Goodrich, Adam Goodrich, Becky Taylor, Erica Miller and Kristen Sobczek. The original State of Michigan Quiz Bowl Championship Tournament was started 25-years ago by former State Senator Dan DeGrow and was held in Port Huron for several years before being moved to MSU. Dan DeGrow, a native of the Thumb, is currently Superintendent of Schools for St. Clair County.
