(SANDUSKY) -- Sanilac County Finance and Administration Committee members received a monthly update on the status of the new jail during their meeting Tuesday afternoon. Jail Observation Representative Loton Eastman reported that the project is just under 75 percent complete and only one percent over budget. Training of employees and general cleanup of the area around the new jail is expected to begin in June.
Committee members also heard from Community Mental Health Director Jim Johnson, who submitted his 2013 Annual Program Plan. Johnson reported that the number of children living below the poverty level in Sanilac County is increasing. He also said that there has been a rise in demand for therapy services over the past several months.
In other business, the committee approved the use of the courthouse lawn for the Sandusky farmer's market. The market will run from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. every Thursday this summer, beginning on May 9th.
Board members also approved the purchase of three new patrol cars for the Sanilac County Sherrff's Department at a combined cost of $70,611. An additional $4,816 was allocated for the purchase of a new trailer for the sheriff's work crew equipment.
The measures are expected to become official when they head to the full Board of Commissioners next week.
