(AREA) -- Two local meat processors received state awards at the Michigan Meat Association Cured Meat Competition held recently in Lansing. Fifteen meat processors entered 119 projects into the competition that hosted fourteen classes. Johnston's Meats of Peck took Grand Champion honors in the Jerky Whole Muscle category and Champion in the ham competition. Country Smoke House in Almont took home Champion honors in the Shelf Stable Snack Sticks and Specialty Venison Sausage categories. Members of the Michigan Meat Association not only compete in the annual competition, but also support the MSU meat program, which educates future meat industry professionals.
