(PORT HURON TOWNSHIP) -- An inmate in the St. Clair County jail awaiting trial on a home invasion charge, committed suicide in his cell Friday afternoon. Sheriff Tim Donnellon says the 28-year old Port Huron man tied a sheet around his neck and laid down in a bed covering himself with a second sheet. Corrections deputies performing their rounds originally thought the man was sleeping. Deputies immediately contacted medical staff and began CPR on the man. He was transported to Mercy Hospital and pronounced dead. Sheriff Donnellon says it was determined that the Corrections Deputies performed their duties by the book and did everything possible to assist the man. He noted that the inmate had a long history of mental illness and had made other attempts at suicide.
