(HURON COUNTY) -- Ice fishermen taking to the lakes are reminded to use extreme caution. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson says sporadic depths of ice have been reported all over the Saginaw Bay--from 9 inches to 3 inches in some areas. Hanson says his department was contacted last weekend when an ATV and equipment were found floating in broken ice, several miles offshore of the Sebewaing area. For a period of time, it was not known if the operator or riders had made it to shore or were safe. Caution can't be stressed enough because many areas of the ice on Wild Fowl Bay and certainly Saginaw Bay, have not frozen equally. Fishermen are asked to report to Huron Central Dispatch if they break through the ice and leave their equipment unattended for any period of time so that rescue units aren't dispatched needlessly.
