Kinde man jailed after attempting to steal a semi truck from Scott's Quik Stop

(LAMOTTE TOWNSHIP) -- A 19-year old Kinde man was arrested early Monday after attempting to steal a semi truck from Scott's Quik Stop in Sanilac County's Lamotte Township. Deputies were sent to the business at the intersection of M-46 and M-53 just after 6 a.m. They learned that the driver of the semi owned by Jensen Bridge and Supply of Sandusky, David Schmidt, had stopped at Scott's and ran inside leaving the semi running. As Schmidt was check out at the cash register, he noticed the semi moving. Schmidt immediately ran outside and was able to open the door to the semi and apprehend the 19-year old suspect behind the steering wheel. Deputies arrested the Kinde man for unlawful driving away of an automobile. He remains jailed on a $25,000 bond. Further investigation revealed that the Kinde man took his grandmother's vehicle without permission in Huron County earlier in the morning. That vehicle was found in a ditch on M-53 near Deckerville Road. From there, the suspect was able to get a ride to Scott's Quik Stop. Deputies say the man was planning on driving to Florida.
