(WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP) -- A 76-year old Carsonville man was seriously injured after being struck by a falling tree Monday afternoon. Sheriff Garry Biniecki says the incident took place shortly after Noon on vacant land in the 1000 block of Rowe Road in Washington Township. Deputies say the victim, Duane Nichol, had been cutting a tree that had been dead for some time and was brittle. The tree split unexpectedly and struck him in the head. Nichol was transported to McKenzie Health System in Sandusky by Sanilac Ambulance personnel and later flown to a Saginaw area hospital for further treatment. The Carsonville Fire Department assisted deputies at the scene.
