(SANILAC COUNTY) -- Award recipients for the annual Sandusky Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Banquet have been announced. This year's event will be held Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at Woodland Hills Golf Club in Sandusky. Doors open at 5 p.m., dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. and the awards ceremony will start at 7 p.m. Nominated as "Citizen of the Year" was William Dixon. Bill is the owner of the Sandusky Tribune/Deckerville Recorder. He is the past president of the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce and Sandusky Lions Club. Bill was chosen for the award for the countless hours that he has put into the many events and organizations in the community. The "Volunteer of the Year" is Sanilac County Drain Commissioner Greg Alexander. Greg is being honored for his work with the Sanilac County Hockey Association. He has served as a Grand Knight for the Sandusky Council of the Knights of Columbus and is active in the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce festivals. The Sandusky WalMart will be named "Business of the Year" for donating over $15,000 to the community over the last year. The "Civic Samaritan of the Year" award will be given to the Sandusky Fire Department for the staff's tremendous dedication to the community. Along with supporting relief efforts, department members take part in every parade, fireworks display, offer school tours and also provide Trick-or-Treat candy screenings. Eastern Michigan Bank, Stonegate Village Assisted Living, and Family Eye Care will receive a "Golden Hammer" award for adding a major addition onto their existing buildings or completing a significant remodeling project.
