Local volunteer answers Red Cross call; heads to Kentucky

(SANILAC COUNTY) – Brad Harris of Sandusky is no stranger to emergency services.

Having served on the Sandusky Community Fire Department for several years, and working as a member of the local Red Cross chapter, Harris was quick to accept the challenge of a phone call he received following the devastating tornados in Kentucky and other areas.

The retired Sanilac County firefighter and Red Cross volunteer boarded an airplane Monday enroute to Mayfield, Kentucky where he will work with the American Red Cross assisting those impacted by the deadly tornadoes.

Nearly 100 people have been found dead and the death toll is expected to rise as emergency workers continue to sift through the rubble of Mayfield, Kentucky and other locations.

The storms are said to have created tornados touching the EF-5 scale or higher, with winds well over 225 mph.

Storms strength are expected to be confirmed by weather experts in the coming days.

Harris said he received the call from the Red Cross late this past weekend, asking him if he could head south to help the victims from the tornados. He intends to spend a minimum of two weeks in the region, assisting victims and emergency agencies.

Harris has responded to other emergencies throughout the Midwest and Eastern states in previous years, helping victims from hurricanes, storms and other disasters.

Harris, who has the support of his family with his willingness to assist others, has been known to volunteer during emergency disasters at a drop of a hat and stay as long as there is a need. His trip to Kentucky will be no exception.
