(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) – Thursday evening, a Port Huron police officer brought a citizen to McLaren Port Huron Hospital who was in need of medical attention.

While there, in an unrelated incident, a 70-year old Lexington man unknowingly walked out of the hospital, opened the driver’s door of the police cruiser that was running and unlocked, and drove away.

The suspect then drove the patrol car without headlights and exited the hospital lot.

The Lexington man then drove south on 10th Avenue crossing the 10th Street Bridge and collided with a vehicle at 10th Street and Lapeer Avenue.

The patrol car struck a vehicle driven by a 35-year old Fort Gratiot resident and occupied by a 39 year old passenger from Port Huron with both being uninjured.

The suspect, who appeared disoriented, had a head injury and was transported by Tri-Hospital EMS to McLaren Port Huron Hospital for treatment.

Port Huron Police Road Patrol, Major Crimes Unit, and Accident Investigators responded to the scene.

The investigation continues. If you have any information about this stolen vehicle or traffic crash, you are asked to call the Port Huron
