Deckerville threat forces cancellation of classes

(SANILAC COUNTY) – Threats have continued to be posted on various social media platforms and have reached Sanilac County.

In a letter to school district parents, Deckerville Superintendent Michael Hugan said he was made aware of a threat that stated “Heard they gonna shoot yo Deckerville school on Monday {sic}”.

“This is being circulated repeatedly throughout our greater school community. Needless to say, it is causing much anxiety.” Hugan stated.

He says he has requested increased law enforcement on the campus from Deckerville Police and the Sanilac County Sheriff Department.

School district officials and law enforcement investigated the threat and determined it was not credible.

The Superintendent said in light of recent events, they have decided to cancel school on Monday, December 6th and will resume classes on Tuesday.

Hugan said school officials have also requested increased law enforcement presence for the rest of the week.

Meanwhile, Sandusky Community Schools can be added to the list of local schools that have received threats, albeit non-specific, following the shooting in Oxford.

Superintendent Paul Flynn says the school received a report of an implied, non-specific threat toward other students that was reported to staff.

Administration was notified and immediately began an investigation, and per protocol contacted Sandusky City Police.

Superintendent Flynn said police conducted an immediate investigation with the individual and their family at their home and it was determined that there was no credible threat to students or staff at any time.

He went on to add, “At no point did the school have any information suggesting there was any immediate danger to the staff or students and did not require the building to go into lockdown.”

Families of the students who were identified in the investigation have been contacted by school administration.

Flynn said the district takes any and all threats, specific or implied, very seriously and will investigate all concerns brought to their attention.

Additional law enforcement was present at all district buildings Friday.
