(SANILAC COUNTY) – With just three payments yet to be received this year for the Sanilac County Road Commissionfrom Michigan Transportation Funds, the department is on pace to once again take in more than the previous year.

Thanks to a gas tax that was approved years ago, Sanilac County Road Commission’s MTF funds has increased steadily each year.

Since 2016 when they took in just over $377,000 in the month of September, the Road Commission has watched as payments ballooned to $731,000 during the same time frame this year.

After taking in $5.6 million dollars in 2016, the Road Commission is on pace to exceed last year’s total MTF payments that totaled more than $9 million dollars.

The Road Commission also received more than $143,000 dollars in State Reimbursements for August, the third highest payment this year.

Those funds are reimbursements to the County for doing contracted work on roads owned by the State.

In other financial statements reviewed by Road Commissioners, the County has been paid over $1.3 million dollars in Township contributions, for work that has been done on secondary roads in various townships.

In other Road Commission news, Operations Manager Dale Stolicker told the board crews continue to do regular maintenance along various roads, while also spending many hours cleaning up from the recent windstorm.

Crews have also completed hauling 3700 ton of gravel into Custer Township for side road improvements along with another 2,300 ton in Elk Township.

Work continues in Sanilac Township near the Washington Road roadside park where crews have placed hundreds of ton of anchor rock and hundreds of yards of clay and topsoil in an effort to slow erosion along the shoreline of Lake Huron.

26 cross culverts have also been ordered from Jensen Bridge in Sandusky in anticipation of next year’s paving projects throughout the county.
