Medicare scam in Croswell

The Croswell police department has received several complaints of a possible Medicare scam that is going around the area. According to police, the caller states that they need personal medical information as well as their Medicare number.

Authorities warn, if you or a loved answers a suspicious call, be wary. Some reports suggest the callers are very empathetic and knowledgeable, which makes them appear credible and trustworthy. Police say in other cases, the caller reportedly speaks in heavy, foreign accents and broken English, making them slightly easier to spot.

Scammers often gather basic personal information on their targets like full names, birthdates and mailing addresses before they call. The data is used to convince you of their legitimacy and make you feel comfortable with sharing additional sensitive information.

If you doubt the validity of a phone call, police are advising to tell the caller you’d like to call the person back and ask for their direct number. This will usually prompt a scammer to get flustered and hang up.

Police say a legitimate insurance company or medical business will always respect the desire for privacy and security.

If you feel like you have been a victim of fraud, you may contact the local police department or call the customer service number on the back of your Medicare card.
