The Sanilac County Road Commission met Wednesday morning, taking care of business in a short period of time.

Paving projects continue throughout the County including the paving of Bay City Forestville Road from Hoadley Road to M-19 that was recently approved and starting by the end of this week, or the first of next, a six-mile stretch of South Sandusky Road (M-19) will be milled and re-paved from Sandusky to Marlette Road.

Another paving project, on French Line Road from South Sandusky to Juhl Road, in Watertown and Elmer Townships, was recently completed.

Crews also continue the rebuild of a portion of Shabonna Road and will be piling large anchor rocks from Alpena for continued erosion work along the shoreline of Lake Huron near the Washington roadside park in Sanilac Township.

In other Road Commission news, although they have yet to receive their Michigan Transportation Funds for the current month, Finance Director Terri Taylor said they did receive a payment of nearly $781,000 dollars for July.

The payment was the Road Commission’s highest amount of July funding from the State in the past five years. For the year, the Road Commission has taken in over $5.7 million in MTF payments and received another $850,000 in State Reimbursements.

Townships throughout the County continue to be busy with improvements, including gravel applications and have spent over one million dollars this year so far, with Township contributions being over $340,000 in July.

It’s also been a busy summer for the Sanilac County Road Commission, between moving their administrative offices from their Flynn Street address to their new building at the corner of South Elk and Speaker Street and keep crews busy with primary road paving work.

Road Commission officials say between the building purchase (the former Greenstone Building) and various renovations, they have spent in excess of $263,000 dollars.

Meanwhile, over $4 million will have been spent on paving County roads when the work is completed later this fall.

Among the projects was the repaving of French Line from South Sandusky Road to Juhl Road at a cost of more than $975,000 dollars and a two-mile stretch of Clifford Road south of Marlette, at a cost of $312,000 dollars.

Among the work still remaining is a six mile stretch of South Sandusky Road from Miller Road south to French Line Road, a project estimated to cost around $464,000 dollars.

Just over half of the paving costs have come from road millage money.
