The issue of police protection in Imlay City continues to be a hot button for city residents as officials consider whether or not they will continue with the city’s own police department, or contract with the Lapeer County Sheriff Department.

Mayor Joi Kempf and other city officials remain in contact with residents to gather their input prior to the city commission making a final decision.

Lapeer County Sheriff Scott McKenna has presented city officials with a preliminary plan for coverage by deputies, if the city was to choose to contract with the department.

McKenna said the role of police operations in the City will be no different, except more added coverage.

The residents and businesses would see very little change except for the color of the uniforms and cars.

McKenna says the department’s office will operate the same hours that is does now, in the exact same building with the hopes of retaining the current Office Manager, employing her full time at the County.

All patrol cars and Officers/Deputies would report and conduct their day at the same current Imlay City Office with the same staffing operation, with Deputies remaining in Imlay City along with all patrol cars for their shift.

McKenna concluded by saying the only time deputies would leave area is for serious emergencies or to assist other officers, no different then what the department does now.

Board members of the Imlay City Commission will continue to meet and discuss the issue, before making a final decision.
