Imlay City residents push to keep PD

(LAPEER COUNTY) – Imlay City residents are continuing their push back against city officials, after learning the police department could potentially be disbanded.

City officials began initial talks of discovery, both with the concept of disbanding and merging with the Lapeer County Sheriff Department or to maintain their departmernt and select a new Police Chief.

Current Chief Scott Pike is retiring from the department at the end of this month.

In one-on-one meetings Thursday with the Imlay City mayor, residents asked if anyone had checked the City Charter that currently requires a police department.

They also asked about the status of current officers, but were given no definitive answers.

The city attorney will be consulted to investigate the legality of disbanding the department, if the City Commission choses to go that route.

No final decision has been made.

Residents are also planning on attending a meeting next Tuesday to further express their concern.
